Vinous 84
Full, dark red, with an amber rim. Rather syrupy aromas of coffee, mocha and alcohol. Dense and thick but somewhat weedy; fairly penetrating and concentrated, but beginning to lose its fruit. Acids seem a bit intrusive today. Finishes with slightly gritty tannins. Past its best.
Robert Parker 78
Tasted at the 1982 dinner at The Square. This has an odd nose, very earthy and mushroomy, quite bretty and slightly fecal and yet you cannot deny that there is a sense of delineation here. The palate has a sweet entry with touches of kirsch and creme de menthe, but there is a lot of volatility that renders this Troplong unstable, whilst the finish is redolent of mouldy fruit. Not particularly enjoyable, at least not after 28-years. Past its best. Tasted August 2009.
