Vinous 90
The 2002 Pichon-Baron has a tar- and smoke-scented bouquet that does not match the precision of the 2001. It is much more reserved in style, lacking a bit of flair. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and quite foursquare, although it is redeemed by impressive detail toward the finish, which offers cedar and a touch of graphite on the aftertaste. Conservative but drinking well at the moment. Tasted at the Pichon-Baron vertical at the chateau.
Anticipated maturity: 2018-2035
Robert Parker 90
Tasted blind at Farr’s 2002 Bordeaux tasting. Very good definition on the nose: blackberry, melted tar, cedar-wood and a touch of smoke. The palate is ripe with solid tannins, a touch of austerity lending it a masculine persona, backward towards the finish with notes of blackberry leaf and pencil lead. Good length but a little aloof at the moment. Tasted October 2009.
