Lato’s 2011 Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard is wonderfully vivid in the glass. Crystalline and layered, the 2011 impresses for its overall balance. The addition of 2% whole clusters works magic here, and gives the wine a sense of lift while not detracting at all from its depth. Sage, rosemary and graphite notes all add complexity to the dark fruit. A striking, beautifully delineated finish rounds things out in grand style. The Padrino is one of Paul Lato’s finest 2011s. Lato gave the 2011 Il Padrino 100% new French oak barrels, all of which it handles beautifully.
