The 2020 Le Carillon d'Angelus has an impressive nose: well defined, more mineralite than its peers, lively black fruit and neatly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening, a bit Bretty perhaps. It's actually a bit of a comedown after the aromatics and just feels a bit more forward than I would like. This doesn't show nearly as well as it did out of barrel. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 Le Carillon d’Angelus (a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) rocks up with ready-to-go scents of plum preserves, blackberry pie and mulberries, plus hints of spice cake, aniseed and unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate has lovely freshness and an approachable, soft texture framing the crunchy black fruits, finishing long and savory.
Anticipated maturity: 2023-2038
